Has anyone had any experience - positive or negative - with vertical gardening?

Finally gotten the digital camera going again, so I can share pictures too!

My garden is about nine years old, so it's a bit overgrown, but I love it dearly. The plantable space behind the house is roughly 40x40 feet (I live in the middle of a city) and until recently has been deeply shaded.
